So I'm struggling with whether or not to fix mine. 192K on my 03 A6 Avant. Interior is clean but body is not perfect with a dent just forward of front left wheel and two areas of paint bubbling up - on the roof no less and lower left rear door. Car drives great, but it needs both CATs to get through inspection, almost 100k since last timing belt, needs rear trans mounts, tires, driver door latch, and I've got a heck of a noisy Secondary Air Injection Pump that will fail at some point. My indy isn't a particular fan of the 3.0L as opposed to the 2.8.

I'd go ahead and flush that one if it were mine. Sorry.

I reluctantly coming to the same conclusion. Just difficult to find a replacement. I really love the A6 wagon. Hard to find anything clean in the Northeast that doesn't already have a ton of miles on it. Even same 03-04 with 100k miles are going for $10k.

Try an Allroad. Same car but with better engine and raised (and adjustable) air suspension.

Find one with a manual transmission.

My wife's 2002 allroad here in New England has 48K miles and looks like new so they do exist. Don't give up - there's one just right for you out there somewhere.

I value maint over miles. As your son proved, you can kill a car in a few miles. If the oil has been changed regularly (less than factory spec), these things will run a while. Think about the eventual mortality of cats. How's the exhaust? I assume the control arms have been done twice. ready again? Any rust?

A well maintained car is worth taking a chance on. And i will in fact pay up for a well maintained car that needs nothing, despite miles.

Well based on the responses and the "pre-purchase" inspection from a reputable foreign auto mechanic I bought the car for $3100.
The inspection showed it had dirty brake fluid and needed an air filter.
Just ridiculous compared to the 98 I sold. If I had taken that in before I sold it the list would have been ten miles long it was so beat to hell. Drives like a dream, quiet as can be, zero leaks and not a scratch on the interior . The exterior has one tiny little dimple in it.
I'll post some Pics later!
Thanks for all the responses!
