Default Looking to buy a C5 A6

HI, I am planning to buy an A6 and I would like to know what to look out for. Anything in particular I should really look into. I am open to either the 4.2 or 2.7T.

Whatis a few major problem with the C5 A6??
Which one will be faster?
which one will have less problems?
Which one will last me longer? ( as in miles)

Any Suggestions will be very helpful. Thanks

C5 is a very solid Plataform
the 2.7T is faster than the 4.2
the should be more reliable and last you longer since it's a non-turbo engine

Default Hmmm...

this question seems to come up a lot. My thoughts (having owned a 2.7T in the past and now own a 4.2)...

The A6 C5 platform is a solid car regardless of which engine you choose.

The 2.7T has the advantage of huge potential for tuning for increased power, is lighter and more fuel efficient than the 4.2, AND if you want a manual transmission, it is only available with the 2.7T (unless you go back a few more model years and find a rare 5-speed 2.8). The disadvantages of the 2.7T include the fact that they have turbos, which can fail and be costly to replace, but that would be true for any engine component. It is just one...actually two...more moving parts.

The 4.2 has the advantage of 300 HP vs the stock 250 HP found on the 2.7T, but again, you can chip a 2.7T for more power anyway, while you cannot do the same to the V8 engine. It is a great highway cruiser, effortles and very smooth power band. Of course, those wider fender flares give the car a much more aggressive look than the "narrow body" 2.7T. The disadvantages of the 4.2? It is a hog on gas, and is slow off the line. In addition, there seem to be more reports of more tranny failures than I would like to see in the V8 model (including the S6).

In the end, you need to DRIVE BOTH and decide for yourself which one pulls your heart strings!!!

Default Depends...

if that is what is in your budget, it has been carefully maintained, already had the timing belt done, then sure, maybe. I'd definitely recommend that you have a mechanic you trust check it out for you.

Default 103,000 on mine... bought it with 100,500 and no problem yet

although i got a free timing belt chance with the purchase as well an a new ABS unit. as long as the seller has taken care of the maintnence or is willing to knock off a few dollars for you to do it, id say go for. this is great high-mileage car for the money

FWIW my car is a 2000.

Default is the auto tranny any less reliable than the 6-speed on the 2.7T??

I am lending more toward the 2.7T due to the potential it carries.

Default AFAIK there are a LOT less problem with the MT than the AT

obiously, im not saying the MT's are bullet proof, but i tend to see many more complaints/stories about the AT.

if you want to mod id suggest the MT, makes for a much more fun ride

Default If you are looking to tune the car, then go with the 6-speed...

it is just one less potential expensive thing to fix. Of course, the manual tranny may require repairs down the road, but probably nothing near the cost of repairing an auto tranny!

Sounds like you are interested in tuning the car for more HP. Just make sure you totally understand what you are getting into, and carefully research your decisions. I was this // close to getting a chip for the 2.7T, but I bought it Certified Pre-owned from Audi, and I feared that the chip would kill the transferable warranty, so I resisted.

My favorite ride so far inan A6 was in Esquire6's beast. K04 turbos, Giac X chip, Euro recaro RS6 seats, and Alcon BIG brake kit. WOW! That thing moved!
