I found a relay under the plenum cover, like a main relay, big 40amp sucker or some such, that when I pulled it from its socket the fan went off. I kept the relay out except when I wanted to drive the car until I got a new relay. The new relay worked. I disassembled the old relay and the points had welded closed.

Open the big plastic box under the plenum cover. It's right in front of the driver side. Four or five bolts into the plastic box, the back two can be a beatch to get out, don't break the box cover! With the engine off and the coolant fans running, pull one relay at a time until you find the right one. It should be #2 or #3 so start with those.
These are under the steering wheel correct ? I managed to sort of crack it open to see a bunch of relays but I couldn't reach them and I don't know where to de attach the plastic cover any idea if there's latches or screws in order to take it off ? And if where they're located

Default The one I replaced was in the engine compartment.

Under the plenum cover in the big black box on the drivers side of the battery.

Default Looking for J101 relay

Bringing up this old thread: I am also hunting the #2 relay position for the Second Speed Coolant Fan Control Relay J101.

This is not the relay Sloop referred to in post #12 here. The 8-Fold Relay Panel must be the one under the steering wheel or knee bolster. However, it looks nothing like the one in the diagram in post #10 here. The diagram makes it look as though this is one single large relay panel. There are 3 smaller relay panels in my 2001 A6 2.7. One is tucked up underneath and behind another. In my car there does not appear to be anything in what I would assume to be the #2 relay position. Am I taking the drawing too literally?

I am not getting any high speed on my 2 electric cooling fans and thought this J101 relay made sense to be the culprit. Does anyone have a thought on this?

Thanks

So, there are a couple of interesting things about the wiring diagrams:

1) There is a split in the diagrams between the 2000 2.7t and the 2001 2.7t.
2) There is a difference in the diagrams between the single coolant fan and the two coolant fans.

I have attached the pertinent wiring diagram for a 2001 2.7t with two cooling fans. The reason that you cannot find a J101 relay is that there is none for your car. In an earlier thread, I posted a test procedure for the high speed on your fan. I suggest that you use that procedure, and consider the Fan Control Module (J293) as the culprit.

George, suspected this was the case. I have the Bentley manual on a disc and have never cared for this presentation. Much prefer being able to thumb through pages. Anyway, I understand newer model years have the PWM and no distinct speeds. So, the 2001 does not have a J101. Thanks for confirming.

Please consider posting just which thread has the test procedure for the high speed. I am sure I have read it once or twice but there are so many threads on cooling fans that I get dizzy reading through them all. I would appreciate a quick link.

In my post, there is a pdf of the fan testing procedure. This procedure tests both high speed and low speed.
