Max recommended/allowed difference between min & max tread depth on quattro = ?
I recently ruined one tire (DOOOHHH!!!) hitting a rock on a "spirited" drive. I bought a replacement (same tire/size as b4) but was told by one tire dealer that biggest allowable difference between tread depths is 4/32". As such they would not do install - liability, blah, blah ,blah.
That meant I needed to buy a second new front tire for another $150. Went to another tire dealer (they have Roadforce balancer) who then told me 2/32" max difference. WHoaaa - this would have required two MORE new tires or PITA tire shaves. Current tires only had 6k miles on them and although rears prolly only had 4-5/32" on outer edges, but middle and inside was 6-7/32". Went back to first installer and they did the front two tires. I know have 10/32" on new fronts and between 3-6/32" difference depending on where you measure between front/rear. I have compensated somewhat my overinflating rear (45 psi) and underinflating front (36 psi) - no lectures please about how this upsets handling characteristics. I know this is an important issue with quattro, but is there an actual AUDI quantitative requirement as opposed to "all tires shall be same diameter" type statement. |
you might want to ask over in the tire forum,....there's a few people from tire rack there
