n00b - racing with a friend down route 3- how to shift

Driving down route 3, I see a friend, he decides to race me, I am travelling 70mph in 6th gear (standard tranny)
Do I just floor it, or should I down shift to 4th or 5th.

Downshifting...

will increase your rmps allowing you to accelerate faster..

Shift right into STFA mode....

....where you will find, AW does not condone street racing.

you would want to downshift to the gear which would put you in your optimial powerband

What he said... WOW you & your friend were both driving @ a closed track?? :-)

those commercials state "professional driver on a closed course" for a reason. And if you meant...

Rt. 3 in Jersey, then you're totally whacked even doing 70 in the first place. If not, what everyone else said.

Route 3 near the MA, NH border and

don't worry the speed limit is 65 mph- I brought the car from 70 to 110 MPH for about half mile, and then back to 70.
End of race:>)
BTW- I only used 6th gear, and it was sluggish at the beginning, my friends GM was faster at the beginning.

Really, if you have to ask, get an automatic Corolla.

3rd or 4th at 70mph.

If I was pushing pretty hard (not actual racing but spirited driving) I would upshift from 2nd to 3rd at just under 60. I can't remember where 4th comes but in general you want to shift pretty much at redline or a bit below. If your speed is going to vary from 60 - 80 and you want to concentrate on things other than shifting (and if you need to ask about shifting then you probably should be concentrating on your driving pretty hard) then you could probably leave it in 4th and not loose too much.

I went to a driving school when I first got my 2.7t. We were on a track and could go as fast as we wanted. I think I got up to 110-120 and if I remember correctly, I never went past 4th gear.
