Need help deciding on what car to buy (Audi A6 4.2 vs. Audi S4).
I just sold my 2000 BMW 328ci, and I want to buy an Audi. I have narrowed it down to either an A6 4.2 or an S4 (both 2000-2001). I've been looking on Ebay, online, and at a few local dealership, and they seem to be roughly the same price with comparable mileage. I am leaning more towards the A6 4.2, hence this message on the A6 board. I just would like to hear some other opinions from current A6 owners. Seems from what I have read that the 4.2 will be about as quick as the 2.7T S4 with the same MPG, but is more reliable and has more features. Is this correct? Thanks in advance

As MTM said, it boils down to how much room you need.
There's no question that the S4 is sportier, but there isn't enough room in there for me to pack my two kids in the back for a long ride. Additionally, the 4.2 is a great highway cruiser (where I do most of my driving). Don't know much about turbo failure rates on the S4, but the 4.2 is a bullet-proof motor. I just checked the Model Guide, and couldn't believe that there was that little difference in performance (for Tip). Based on that, I say 4.2 all the way!!

Had an S4, S8 and currently 4.2 and 2.7T A6. If you want Bimmer handling with AWD and 300 HP, go
for the B6 "new" S4. The A8 will handle like a dog compared to an old 5 series. The A6 drives smaller, but has a wheelbase/length beyond what a sports car should be. The old S4 has an outdated rear suspension design that becomes its weakness when power is added. The new S4 is really the best of all worlds for a sporty 4 door that doesn't drive too big. Magazines compare it to the M3, but it is to fat for that series, IMHO. Just drove a new 545 and S4 back to back. Amazingly, the Bimmer with the funky new steering is more detached than an AWD vehicle. The new S4 is really an expression of lux sport and balances everything from looks to performance very well. Just a thought.

The S4 will be slightly quicker...
and more nimble feeling. The 4.2 will be more reliable. If you get an S4 go for the 2001 especially if it has any reminaing warranty. The 2001's had many little fixes and will be somewhat more reliable than the 2000 MY.
Think of the A6 as more of a luxo cruiser while the S4 is a quick little sedan.

The 2001 A6 4.2 is the finest Audi EVAR!!!
Ok, so that's debatable...but the 4.2 is one fine automobile...especially with the sport package...the seats are great and the engine is sooo smooth.
I wouldn't buy a tip S4...the tip kills that engine, IMO.
Depends on how old/young you are/feel, if you haul a family around, etc...but I had a 4.2 and it was sick-***, even though it was just me and the wife...we didn't need the space...but it was the most satisfying vehicle I've ever owned.

had '01 S4, now have '00 A6 4.2...
... my 6 spd. S4 felt quite a bit quicker (also 6 spd.) and had better gas mileage (still brutal); gas tank in S4 too small, same for the back seat + starting to look dated (especially inside). A6: much more luxury, good performance and right size for me, bigger gas tank...
