Loud Ticking noise from the 3.0
Hello all,
After a relatively long and reliable running (4 years since last major issue) our 2002 3.0 started making a loud ticking noise from the driver side bank.
I searched and found ticking issues reported on both 3.0L and the 2.7 cars.
The car is still under an Extended warranty so I took the car to the dealer. So far they have narrowed it down to a loose fuel related spring on top of the cam and are investigating if the cam itself has some markings and needs replacement. The car now has 91K on it.
I wanted to ask if anyone else has had this issue and what was the end prognosis?
Thank you for your input.

It's not uncommon for the 3.0 to eat camshafts. Thank god you are still under warranty. Consider selling the car before you go out of warranty. STFA for nasty pictures of damage. Search the B5 forum too. Good luck.

You can change the oil more often than Audi says and use a good synthetic.

Got a call from the dealer that the warranty company has "refused" the $3100 camshaft etc repair/replacement until it can be inspected by a warranty inspector, and the fun begins.

Not unusual to have to wait until the inspector sees it. As long as you had the dealer do the oil changes and/or have documented the oil changes yourself with receipts, dates, etc., you should be ok.

The Warranty company has paid over $2500 on a $2700 policy and they are about to write another $3200 check (if they approve).
This will be the first 3.0L specific issue I have had, so far all issues were the usual C5 issues.
It is still frustrating that on a 1 owner car, that was serviced at the dealer from day 1 in 2002, never went over 5000 miles on a synthetic oil and all preventative maint done thousands of miles earlier than needed, the car is still no where near "nomal" levels of reliability.
Once the car is fixed I might seriously consider selling it.
