So I gave up on searching for a used a6 4.2 headlight. I decided that I did not want to risk waiting for a while for a used to be delivered to me, and it not working. So I searched for a OEM replacement...
Audi quoted the headlight at $1,800 including installation. Over 1200 just for the headlight.
I searched through Google.com and came across
partstrain.com With shipping the total was $431.85 I figured it came as just the housing minus the ballast and xenon bulb. I got the package today and it included the whole housing + ballast + bulb... I am very happy and will certainly use them again!

Did your car already have HID or was this a conversion?

thats actually a great deal if you want to do HID upgrade...i wonder if they sell ballast/starters

I already had xenon... also it came with the ballast
