"P0411 static" changed to "P0411 intermittent" 1999 2.8L
Background: So I'm trying to get my A6 ready for smog in California after the tech discovered I had catalytic converters for a 2000 ATQ, which means swapping out a perfectly good set of fitted, dual cat, CARB Walker cats that cost about $900. I've spent over $1000 replacing them with universal single cats (the only cats approved besides $3600 Audi) and have two new problems. The leak from under the connecting clamps is easy to fix once the parts come in, but the code is trickier.
Technical: in the process of removing the top flange nut, I wrecked the elbows on the SAI combi valves with the speed wrench. (If I'd known they pulled off despite clamps, I would have done that for their safety.) Unfortunately, I only discovered this after getting my readiness set by a friend with Ross-Tech, throwing a P0411 code, and troubleshooting for a couple of days. I've been driving for a few days hoping the ECU will figure out the vacuum lines on the combi valves are ok now and the code will drop out without having to redo readiness or drive around enough to satisfy smog if I clear codes.
Question: It's been about 3 drive cycles, and now my Schwaben-label Foxwell says the code is "intermittent" instead of "static". Does that mean it's in the process of realizing it's ok now, or is it likely to mean I have another problem that's intermittent? I've been searching online but haven't found anything about intermittent P0411, let alone this shift.
I just want it to run right and pass smog, without tickets for driving it in the meantime. It's been 6 weeks since I installed the new cats, and my tags expired over 2 months ago so I'm driving on moving permits "to get repairs" or "to go to the smog station". Luckily, SJPD has bigger things to worry about than stopping people to make sure their temporary registration didn't expire earlier in the month. (I paid fees on time.) Won't be driving to the burbs with bored cops, though.
I still have the ATQ engine from my Passat in my friend's dad's barn, so having the ATQ cats is an investment, I guess.
