You'd be better off with a $400 portable GPS (nt)

Default Not in tunnels


As I understand it, the factory nav system approximates your position via wheel rotation whenever you go out of range of the satellites. I'm sure the accuracy is greatly diminished, but at least you some indication of where you are.

Default It uses a combination...

of both GPS location and vehicle speed. It is very accurate I have found and matches up very well to my hand-held Garmin.

Yes. But when it’s out of range of the satellites (e.g. when you're in a tunnel) it has to rely on vehicle speed alone, which I'm guessing is less accurate. Still, that's a lot better than your hand held, which I assume is just "lost" whenever it can't get a signal.
