Default Purchase : A4 vs A6

We are currently looking at either an A4 1.8T or A6 3.0. Dealer claims to be able to "Deal" on left over '02 A6's. Like the room in the A6. We currently drive an BMW '88 325is and an '97 740i. This car will replace the 740i - wonderful to drive, nightmare to maintain.
Any guidance as to pros, cons of each model would be appreciated.

Matt,
the 740i will have conditioned you to a certain amount of luxurious space, and the A6 will be more comparable to that space than the A4. I believe that the A6 3.0 (which I test drove two weeks ago) is the CVT/multitronic engine (no gears) and as such provides a technological marvel under the hood with no gear shifting (read: "silky smooth transitions during acceleration/deceleration). But the CVT is new and may have some bugs.

Given a choice with comparable price points I would choose the A6 without hesitation. Good hunting.

Default Well, the A6 is sized between your two current cars...

Decide what size car you will want - personally, we like the A6 Avant because the A4 and Passat are just too small for a family. Small cars are cute, but not exactly roomy or ultimately utilitarian.

Default CVT versus Tip w/quattro...

My wife and I drove both a CVT sedan and the Avant Quattro (or, to 'no dot' the story, it was just in a dream) and we weren't impressed with the FWD of the CVT A6. It did shift smoothly, but the ride was not as solid and the road feel was further reduced in our minds. We drove the CVT first and when we drove the Quattro, we noticed a substantial improvement, and both highly preferred the Quattro feel.

An excellent point regarding the front wheel drive-- I would have preferred a BMW or MB to FWD anything. And I further agree that the handling was sub-par (compared to the quattro 4.2, and the BMW 540i).

But back to it, the point is that it remains a question of the A4 or A6, and the answer is unquestionably A6.

A6 is the more logical choice to replace the 740i; A4 is a lot more nimble and a lot less roomy

I just had the same dilemma and opted for the A6. The dealer was able to do much better on the A6 than A4. I got an A6 2.7T with sport, premium, preferred, convenience and heated seats. My price was ~1000 below invoice. I've had it for a week and love it. It replaced a 2000 Volvo S80 T6. Smaller trunk but engine is much smoother with the twin turbos. Now I have to decide whether I want to chip it. The dealer recommends the APR chip and will actually take it to have a third party install it.
