OK, I did have the right bolt. (Just thought I was on the wrong side of the trans)
This time I put the rear on ramps and front on stands. Seemed to give me an extra inch, or maybe I just got really pissed and yanked harder, but the pug cam loose and . . . ..
I am glad it did.
I don't know how much was in there, but the back of the pug was not very wet.
I think I put in about 1/2 a liter before it started coming out and running down my sleeve.
So now the rear sea is free to drip all it wants, till I get it replaced. AT least the diff won't run dry.

Is this possible? Central differential replacement
Assuming your car is a slushbox:
Front diff takes gear oil. Automatic section takes ATF. Center diff takes gear oil. Rear diff takes gear oil.
Front, auto, center sections are combined into one unit with three distinct chambers. If you have ATF in your center diff, either someone installed the wrong fluid or you have an internal seal failure.
