Transmission seals questions
I have a (new to me) 1998 A6 Quattro 2.8 with the 4 speed automatic trans..
I purchased the car cheap knowing it had transmission fluid leaks.
Ive owned several Jetta's over the years and decided to take a chance on this A6. Ive replaced motors and trans and everything else under a hood of a car so i have no issues with dropping the trans doing the seals on this.
Trans code: CJD
Engine code: AFC
From what my research I can tell the tailshaft seal is leaking and the seal between the torque converter seal is leaking as well. I plan on dropping the trans and replacing both seals.
My issue is whenever i bring up the car on dif sites for parts i end up with a bunch of different options for the seals. Anyone know exactly what i need for the TC seal and the tailshaft seal?
Any help on part numbers would be greatly appreciated.. Not looking to replace the whole tailshaft, just redo the seal.
2nd picture is underneath the car where the trans meets the engine, its wet and leaking the most from there..
3rd pict is the trans code
4th is between the 2 cats..

Try googling ZF transmission in chicago, Illinois.
They'll have a telephone number and you can call them with your model and serial number and they'll give you the part numbers.
When you install the TC and tailshaft seals, CW is to slightly offset the seals deeper into the trans if possible or further out if not (seals should at least be flush with the casting) to get a new sealing surface. AT one time there were bushings, thin metal cylinders, available with oversize seals for the tailshaft but I don't know if they're available from ZF.
Try this:
Address: 777 Hickory Hill Dr, Vernon Hills, IL 60061
Phone847) 478-6868

This is a C4 not a C5, this is the old Audi 100 style A6., so this is the wrong section. Your issue is you keep looking up stuff for a 98. Look up 97 or 96 A6 and you wont have any trouble. In 98 the Wagons were still C4, while the sedans went to the new C5 platform. Unfortunately catalog listings end up being confused or incorrect.

Yup.. it is, they switched platforms over mid way through 98 with the wagons. I called my local Audi dealership n spoke to a very helpful service tech. He explained that I needed to look for parts for a 97 & I wouldn't have the same issues. That's how i found the correct seals etc..
As far as posting sections I was going by year, im learning more and more.
Thanks for the help..

Why would one consider changing any rotary shaft seal without first trying the “snake oil“ treatment? Depending upon the fluid being sealed, add a half bottle of engine or auto tranny seal restorer to the fluid and drive it for 1K miles. Works every time!

Both seals were toast and needed replacing.
Magic in a bottle couldn't fix either of the seals.
Replaced it all Thursday and drove 360 miles this weekend. Not a single drop anywhere..
