A very strange issue: lights, blinkers, wipers only work when the car is off
So I decided to pick up an Audi a week ago. It was very cheap and it ran, so it fit my buying criteria. Unfortunately I have to get it inspected within the month so I'm trying to pick up the pieces and get this thing road worthy.
There are a few issues that are beyond my comprehension:
The wipers, blinkers, lights (high beam and low) only work when the car is off. If I turn the ignition switch half way everything is fine, but once I start the car, it they no longer function. I thought maybe it was the switch at first, I only assumed that they didn't work at all. Changed the switch. The relays work obviously. So I'm at a loss. Maybe some of you smart Audi guys can help me out.

It is either in the X relay (load reduction relay) or in the multifunction switch (blinkers, wipers and high/low beams).
You're going to need a wiring diagram for you car to troubleshoot this kind of problem.
Make sure it is the right diagram, the 1998 A6 cars could either be the old chassis (C4) or the new chassis (C5), with completely different wiring.
Which engine do you have? Which transmission do you have? Provide a picture of the engine bay if possible.

george is on point here. It could be either one. I would tip the odds toward the ignition as about 90%. If the multi switch were the culprit you would probably have other anomalies going on. The fact that all the functions are there when you put the ignition in the "run" position but go away after the car is started is another big clue.
