Default That is weird. Does sound like an anti-theft lockout on that remote.

Which makes it sound like the first remote may be broken. I'd do the procedure in the manual and not coloradoaudi's since that route seemed to lockout your working remote. With that failing, I think it's dealer time.

Were the batteries you originally replaced bad? If not, that remote either broke or got uncoded somehow. Pressing it too many times away from the car is supposed to do it - could happen with something else in your pocket pressing the button. If the batteries were bad, still a question of why - they should last years. Again, something pressing the buttons or an electrical fault in the remote.

I tried resetting according to Audi manual (Car off, go outside car, press Unlock/Lock on remote and then quickly unlock/lock car with same master key). Didn't work.

Then I changed the batteries with OEM ones. Didn't work.

Next tried method in ColoradoAudi's January 2001 post below. Now both remotes are not working.

I've become too spoiled using the remote for this to happen on a weekend.
Any ideas?

Coloradoaudi post:
You will need BOTH of your "switchblade" keys to reprogram one or both of them.
1 Take the key you DO NOT want to program and put it in the ignition. Turn it one click forward, until the computer lights up but before starting the car.
2 Close and lock the drivers door with the second key.
3 On the second key (the one in the drivers door) press the 'UNLOCK' button ONCE only. The lights will flash on the car, but the doors will remain locked
4 With the second key still in the drivers door, unlock then lock the door again.
5 Pull the key from the slot and test remote functions.
6 Open drivers door, remove key from ignition.
If both of your remotes don't work, do the above for the first key, but on step #3, press the 'UNLOCK' button twice. The lights will flash twice, then continue on with step #4.

Did you check the owner's manual?

When I had remote issues I goggled several procedures to first resync the remote and then to program a new one.
It took several tries, and unfortunately I did not keep a link to the one that finally worked.

There is a resync instructions in the owners manual, but they did not work for me. (I think (I un-programmed the system with all my playing)

I have no idea why this occured, other than possibly the central locking control unit J429 has reactivated (3 day time delay? or faulty mechanism/coding?). The problem first occured on Friday, and "resolved itself" an hour ago.

Unfortunately, my second remote still hasn't worked since Saturday. Maybe tommorrow it will...

PS. I followed coloradoaudi's method to the letter.
which of the keys is the master key, the plastic key or the non remote key?
