is there anything i need to do before or after to make sure the check engine light doesnt come back on when installing it.

Or is it as easy as remove the old one and replace the new one.
is it possible to have a cracked or defective charcoal canister in an 2011 A6 with only 60k miles? My thermostat recently died and the car overheated. It has been replaced but wondering if the overheating could have caused the canister to crack or become defective?
