S6 Tranny Repair Options

Dealer tells me that the tranny in my 02 S6 is on its last legs. They tell me that they know this to be the case because the fluid is black. I don't know much about automatic trannies, so I have to defer to their expertise, but I was wondering what opinions you guys might have on the subject. I wouldn't mind trying to rebuild the tranny myself as it would be a great learning experience, but I've been told its a colossal pain the butt. I'm also considering a 6-speed install as well.

Any info/opinions would be welcomed. TIA.

The tranny fluid is always pretty dark. Change the fluid and enjoy the car.

Brian,

Change the fluid and filter, and see my recent posts on RS6.COM regarding the IPT valve body modification. This is something you can do, and it results in much more consistent and crisper shifting - my S6 transmission now shifts very nicely. If you are interested in my Tip chip experience, send me a PM.

Right on change the fluid/filter and then diagnose. If you want to swap to a manual, it's been done, but be prepared to pay a very polished penny, unless you go about it yourself.

I agree, there is no way to determine that the tranny will fail simply by looking at the fluid, its an indicator, change the fluid and filter, use high quality fluid(Pentosin).
