snow in CT today - noticed my car with 17" blizzaks...still has trouble with snow grooves on the hw
 

My car is great on back roads, but on the highway at say 40 mph - 50 mph - the car gets sketcy when crossing lanes where there is a build up...or lanes where there are grooves in the snow..... my blizzaks are about 1/2 tread in the rear and about 3/4 in the front. Could the back end tread cause it to be light/sketchy in some areas at higher speeds?

That's pretty normal
 

You're going from one density road covering to another. Even my 6000lb truck with 4wd and deep tread does the same thing.

How wide are the tires?
 

Thin snow tires are the best. It think you should be running 215/50/17 something along those lines. You shouldn't expect to drive the normal speed on snow covered roads.

Also more weight is up front so worn rear tires could cause you to fishtail a little

That's normal. you still have to take it easy, and power through the deep stuff...
 

I take lane changes in steps... Let one side of the car cross over at a time, and pause briefly before crossing with the other side of the car.. And that's with skinny 205/65s..

If it's bad out, I usually look for tracks made by someone else changing lanes...
 

..but yeah, the one side at a time is a good precaution to take.

Yep, that my usual strategy. That way you don't have all 4 wheels slipping/sliding
 

at the same time.

Sounds about par; snow tires only help, they don't make you invincible...
 

...just remember that, regardless of tires, AWD + zero traction = NoWheelDrive.

But it's more fun when all 4 are sliding!!!!
 

That's how I drive in the snow. If the car isn't slipping a little, I'm going too slow.
