Stuck with dash lights on, car won't start/turn off
Audi A6/Allroad Quattro, 2002
Problem: When I tried to start the car this evening, the key turned in the ignition switch but the engine didn't start. Now the following dash lights are on: EPC, battery, check engine, and 'car' symbol with key underneath. The key comes in and out of the ignition switch easily, but without effect. The dash lights won't turn off; the car's engine won't turn on.
The lock/unlock/trunk open functions on the key fob suddenly do not work.
What happened and can this be easily fixed?
I'm hoping for a solution ASAP. I'm worried the battery will be drained through the night.

Update:
Audi service center found the problem to be with the ignition control unit. It's suddenly not recognizing the key to start the car. The ignition control unit is being ordered and will cost approximately $650. After labor, we anticipate a final bill of $1000.
Does all this seem reasonable? There is only one Audi service center in the city we live and we're concerned they keep overcharging us or perform unnecessary maintenance.

Dealer and Reasonable are usually never in the same sentence. You can find the part cheaper for sure but I dont know about install. I would not be suprised if you could get the total down to 400.00
