Default supposed desirability of red/melange A6

I was buying gas at 10:30 the other night when somebody (in a BMW, ha!) pulled up and asked if I wanted to sell my car (tornado red 2001 A6 2.7T). I told him no. He said that the red ones were very rare and people would pay a lot of money for them. I asked why didn't those people just go to a dealer and buy one? He repeated that they were very rare and said if I hung onto it, someone would pay a lot of money for it. Then he asked if I had the tan interior and I said yes, it was melange. This sent him into further paroxysisms of delight as he expounded on the rarity of the red/melange combo.

So is he onto something? It's true I have only seen one other red A6 in the Seattle area, and from the Registry on this site they are unusual. And I preordered my car, I have never seen a red one sitting at the dealer. I also happened to notice that for 2002 the tornado red color is no longer available.

But still, it seems like the reason red is rare is because dealers don't order the color because few people want it. If the dealers noticed a lot of people preordering cars in that color, they would start ordering a few on spec. So who are these people who come out of the woodwork years later and say, "I changed my mind, I really want a red one!"?

Any thoughts?

Default Might this have been a subtle, yet snide, put down...

by a BMW owner? If so, it would be truly "Chuck-worthy."

Default I think you and I are the only 2 Tornado / Melange on this board.

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/15643/new_tint_1.jpg"></center><p>In the 18 months I have had my car, I have never came accross another Tornado A6, only 1 A4.

As far as desirabillity goes. Who knows. Mine was the last 2000 A6 in St. Louis when I bought it in early 2001. that leads me to believe that tornado was not a popular color.

Ilove it though, I am unique from all the Silver.

Default The Tornado Red A6 is definitely rare.

I've only seen one other one here in San Antonio (it was at the dealer and was actually sold to somebody in Dallas).

As for the reason for their rarity, I don't think it's that people don't like the color on the A6, instead I think people just never considered that color as a viable option for a mid-sized luxury car. Hence the low numbers ordered by dealers. When looking for an A6, I myself went to my dealer wanting silver or black. The Tornado Red happened to be on the lot, had the options I wanted and I fell in love. In fact, from my own personal experience everyone seems to love it when they see it.

As a note, I have the Onyx interior and I actually wish I'd gotten the Melange, that is an awesome combo.
