The car blew a water pump and overheated nearly 38k ago, has been fine until about 1k ago though so I don't think that really had anything to do with it?
Depends on how bad it was overheated. 38K ago probably wasn't the cause.
If you're going to trade the car go ahead and put the bars leak in it…it's designed especially for head gaskets so what have you got to lose? If it works, good. If it doesn't, you're no worse off.

It is suppose to seal the gasket. If it works until I find a new car that's all I need. This car is quickly becoming ****ing junk.
The other issue is exhaust gases in the coolant. They will very quickly exhaust any anti corrosive additives in the coolant and damage the engine thereafter.

Would that work on the overflow tank?

That's exactly where you use it. You put some test fluid in the tester and suck up a given amount of coolant from the coolant tank. If the fluid turns yellow you have HC (combustion gases) leaking into the coolant, ergo a head gasket leak.
