Testing chain tensioners?

Hey guys I currently have my car apart during a TB job which I was hunting for a clatter type noise.

Nothing TB related really seemed obvious unfortunately.

In terms of the chain tensioners, they are under tension and have no slack to speak of. The shoes/rails or whatever they are called all seem intact and holding the chain well with no signs of wear.

I'm wondering if there is a way to test them or figure out if there bad before tossing another 1200 into the car.

thanks!

I don't think there is a way to test them. I have also found that by compressing them and re-installing them, sometimes they get very quiet.. iI have a feeling that they, like hydraulic lifters, get gunked up over time, and pushing the old oil out and letting new oil in can help them quiet down..

I have a 98 with 130k on it. when I got the car in DEC. Mine was REALLY loud. either lifter or chain never really bothered to investigate but I feel it was chain since it was real loud moslty in the front of the drivers head. but any how, I put Seafoam in the crank case and drove the car for 500 miles and changed the oil. now 5k miles later car is still quiet! no noise at start or anytime. every car I ever bought I use Seafoam, mostly because I drive either Saab or Audi and both are known for sludging or lifter noise.
