thermostat replacement on 2.8v6
I have a 96a6q with 2.8v6 that I may have a bad thermostat. No temp reading on the engine or oil gauges. Also, blows luke warm to cool air. Anyone have input as to how difficult it is to change and proper procedure to do it. Or, would I be better off to have it done. I know it is expensive. Had it done several years ago and it ran about $400.oo. Any input would be appreciated.

Like Rocky said, it's a big job. The thermostat lies behind the water pump, which is
driven by the timing belt. You have to remove the TB and water pump to access it. Not a small task in the least. If you can get it done for $400, I say go for it.

Some genius in germany said "hey, let's ...":
"... put the thermostat behind the water pump, and then drive the water pump with the cam timing chain! That'll be fun, eh herr Dumpfkopf?"
And the rest is history. Its a lengthy, nasty job.
The good news is that if its cold, it has stuck open. Have you checked water temp with an ifra-red gun? You might find your local, friendly mechanic and do so. It removes much guess work.

The thermostat is $20. There is not much room, but you can change it without removing the TB.
I was out of town when I had to change it on my 94' 100. It took like 30 minutes. It is a tight spot, but it comes out without removing the timing belt.

Re: Are you do for a timing belt? you might as well do it all while you are in there.
Actually, I had the front end done this past summer. New belts, seals, etc. Never thought about the thermostat going bad at this time. I have it replaced at 42k. It now has 78k. Thought it would go longer than that. All of the indications are the same as last time it went. So, I am pretty confident that is what the problem is. I am trying to decide whether to tackle it or let the shop do it.
