Guides are definitely gone / going as well cause if you revved passed 2k rpm you could hear the chain metal on metal, lol. thought it was the drivers tensioner but nope--still has it's pads, just brittle and from 2006. so def the guides.
also wanna say the drivers tensioner is an aftermarket bapmic tensioner and its dated 2006. 12 years later and the pads are still intact, although brittle and needing replacement and the unit still works . pretty good.

when you did this, I assume you did pop the cam gears off of the ends of the cams, to let them spin free, correct?

Not the first time. but the second time--yes, i did. I am assuming this is why the drivers side top cam (intake? or exhaust? not sure..) is off one tooth;because i did not use the pulley the first attempt.

The top cam on the head, located closer toward the engine center & intake manifold is the intake cam. The exhaust cam is driven by the timing belt, while the intake is driven by the cam timing chain btwn exhaust & intake.

Okay guys..pulled the driver side tensioner out and both cams and like i said it is from 2006 and it is a bapmic tensioner but it is in fact NO GOOD anymore. a piece of it that was found next to the tensioner has blown out causing the chain to rub on engine block at 2500+ rpm. I thought this noise was timing chain guides--nope! it was the shot drivers side tensioner all along. the pads are also super brittle now being 12 yrs old.
new tensioner is $207, SO ill grab that from FCP and go from there. will be a while because i am returning some stuff first for credits to use for the new tensioner. Wont have part til the week after next.

should be straight forward installing new tensioner, the hardest part now is how the heck am i gonna line up both the cams correctly in one shot? when i did passengers side i was off a tooth, it is hard to eyeball! and sometimes when you take tension off of tensioner itll move cams a tooth..

There should be marks somewhere on the cam gears, that line up with marks on the tensioner ... https://www.audiworld.com/forums/a6-...chain-2801380/

If you line them up, you should be golden.

Please, please help!
The intake cam on drivers side moved sooo much when i removed the tensioner so now when putting it all back together, that intake cam is still wayy off. so when i align the arrow up to the cam caps, the top (intake) cam sticks up since it is out of alignment completely with the valve springs. it is wayy off and i know i just cant bolt it down like this...
Please help me figure out how to re align that intake cam so. can finish this!!
thank you!!!!
