Default Timing belt service parts checklist

Am I forgetting anything, or anything else reccomended?

Timing belt $59.97
Timing belt tensioner $95.12
Timing belt roller $56.64
Accessory belt $22.47
Water pump $84.58
Gasket $3.52
1.5L red coolant concentrate $11.47 (how much does the system hold? I assume this is a 50/50 mix)

Thanks

Default Looks pretty thorough - not sure which engine you have but

ECS Tuning has a t-belt kit with everything you listed for a 2.8 engine for $254 (it looks like you're over $300).

Oh yeah, someone else mentioned doing the engine mounts with a t-belt. I personally have no idea if that's an item to do at the same time, but thought I'd throw it out.

http://www.ecstuning.com</a

Default Re: Thermostat, cam lock bar.

What does the cam lock bar do? I've never heard it mentioned in any of the articles I've read. Is it a wear item?

Default It's a tool used when changing the timing belt. Lots of people swear they have done it without it..

but it's just so much safer to use it. What it does is, keeps the cams from turning when you are removing and installing the belt. Part of the process involves actually popping the cam gears off of the ends of the cam (the actual gear is NOT keyed, it's on a conical seat) so the gear may spin free of the cam. then you install the belt, and tighten the cam gears down again. If you were to try this without the cam locating bar, you'd have a very tough time keeping the cams in proper time.

There is also a crank locating pin, but it's MUCH harder for the crank to just move on it's own. Even at TDC, there is enough spring on the cams that they can move a little on their own.

Default Do you have a link? How much is it?

This article:

Makes no mention of removing the cam gears.. I don't see why you would have to?? Just mark the both gears horizontally to know the exact position. Even if the gear moves on you, it is still locked on the cam, so you could easily get it back in alignment, right?

https://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng39.shtml</a

Default There are no alignment marks on the cam gears..

you can do it the half assed way in the tech article, or you can do it the 'right' way, which is to lock the cams and let the gears help the belt fit properly. This is to account for slight variations in belts. I did it with the cam bar, it's incredibly easy to mess it up, as a few searches of the A4 board will show.

Check out Zelenda for the cam bar.

Default Thanks..

So the cam lock tool will also time the engine properly?

If the old belt is a tooth off from wear, and you put the new belt on it would still be a tooth off with the articles method?

Sorry for all the questions!

Default Yeah, if it was off before, and you just mark the pulleys to the block, it will still be off..

best bet is to set the engine at TDC according to the mark on the crank pulley, then pull the belt, set the cam bar on, and put the new belt on.
