Tip Acceleration Lag
 

I brought my car in for the bumper recall and the 20k/2 year maintenance. The dealer gave me a spanking new '03 A6 3.0Q Tip loaner.

After some `spirited stop and go' commuter driving, I did not notice the infamous acceleration lag that I experience on my '01 A6 2.7tq Tip. Those who are familiar with `the lag' know it is not turbo related. Rather, it's Tip related. It seems to reveal itself during the 2nd to 3rd gear shift. I've done the Tip recode and installed the GIAC Tip chip; both have improved but not eliminated `the lag'.

Obviously, Audi has either fixed or re-engineered the problem. So, why does the dealership not acknowledge the fix and /or problem?

It actually got fixed in the '02's; neither of mine exhibit it, and the 98 and the 01 that I had
 

before both did it.

A better comparison would be to a new 2.7T.
I have an '01 2.7T TIP and I belive the hesitation/lag is getting worse. Very annoying.
Even Consumer Reports mentioned the lag in their latest review of the A6.

I agree that a newer 2.7T would be a more fair comparison. But what does the engine have to do with the lag? In Tip mode there is no perceptible lag because I control the shifting. In D mode, the lag is between 2nd and 3rd. I don't see the connection between the engine and the lag (turbo lag issues aside).

The fact that there's more lag with a TIP is just an annomoly of the integrated 2.7T/TIP system. The mechanics of the transmission alone can't explain the 0.5 sec delay many of us experience. We know the 2.7T can respond quickly as the manual transmission version has no lag.

Just as high power automatic shifts are "softened" by the software backing off on the throttle, I suspect instantaneous "launching" from a dead stop is controlled too. I also suspect both of these are done to protect the TIP from excess acceleration forces.
