Tow options?

That can only be due to a poorly designed trailer. I have towed an old Audi 100.....
avant - C4 on a good trailer and on good roads you would hardly know it was there.

They also use the vertical flange...see the link from luvnhatemya6
I agree...2K might be a little high. 1500 mo-betta but again there are reinforcement bars with that link's tow setup.
I'd be more concerned with limiting the tongue weight to 150 lbs.

That is correct, you need a proper tow bar. I have a Witter bar whihc I believe.....
you could use, or modify to suit the US spec rear bumper.
I have the detachable swan neck which means the bar is not visible at all when not in use.

http://www.witter-towbars.co.uk/towbars/vehicle_technical_details.aspx?VehicleTowbarID=22</a

You need to change your expectations.
It is not reasonable to expect a car that weighs 3500 lbs, towing a weight of 2000 lbs, to handle like one that is not.
Towing anything with anything requires caution and care.

I agree fully. I am not saying you should drive as if the trailer was not there but.....
the car, as most reasonable sized cars do, seems to cope well with the extra weight.
Towing safety is largely about a well balanced load without a high level of polar inertia.
I am not saying it would be a good idea to regard the A6 as a regular towing workhorse in the same way you would a truck based on comercial vehicle underpinings but it is fine for the average leisure use, towing something like a boat a few weekends every summer.
I my experience, boats tend to tow well anyway as the weight is low and the trailers usually have a good length of drawbar before the axle giving them good stability. The drawback is boat traliers invariably have seized up brakes so you are reliant upon the cars' brakes.
