- Audi A6 C5 How to Replace Transmission Control Module<br>Step by step instructions for do-it-yourself repairs.
Transmission Control Module (TCM) soft coding experiment. I did not remove the thunk but :-) ...

nice work. the way the manual lays out the coding table it seems like..
there is more there than they are willing to tell us.
having the column for 'DSP' implies to me there is a way to code it on and off, but no off codes are listed. kind of like there are a number of valid codes but they decided they didn't want people messing around with it. all conjecture on my part of course...

Does all of this 'soft coding' occur in the tip chip ecu? If so shouldn't GIAC be able to reproduce a few of these tricks (especially disabling the 1st to 2nd auto-shift). Someone mentioned they were expecting a new beta tip chip, it would be damn cool to see some of these enhancements in the next version.
Also, how dangerous is messing with these codes? Are they something you could code yourself and then flip-back before you go in for service?

answers (to some good questions) in above post
Depending on how far we take this experimentation, this is the start of a good F.A.Q.
/dan
---------------------------------------------------------
Q) Does all of this 'soft coding' occur in the tip chip ecu?
A) Yes. All programming to affect TIP behaviour is to control module 02 (TCM).
---
Q) If so shouldn't GIAC be able to reproduce a few of these tricks (especially disabling the 1st to 2nd auto-shift)?
A) Yes. BTW, I've sent e-mail to Garrett Lim asking for any soft-coding details he has.
---
Q) Someone mentioned they were expecting a new beta tip chip, it would be damn cool to see some of these enhancements in the next version.
A) Yes you're right. We should watch for updates from "Vtec_Killer" over in the S4 Forum.
---
Q) Also, how dangerous is messing with these codes?
A) Who knows? All I do know is that the TCM (according to the Bentley manual) will reject invalid codes. As far as I am concerned any value that is accepted is valid. The problem is that we have no idea of the effects it will cause. Yeah, perhaps some are dangerous (disable ESP, ABS, disable downshifting...)
---
Q) Are they something you could code yourself and then flip-back before you go in for service?
A) Yes, TCM coding can be reset to stock at anytime.

Sport mode: Could this be new style Tip's sport mode?
The new style Tiptronic gearboxes lose the 4,3 and 2 selections and replace them with a single S selection. The manual merely states this is a "Sportier driving programme", but has little or no detail as to what it actually does.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/3539/mys8tip.jpg">
Audi Driver magazine has a small article on the 'new' Tiptronic which states that in S mode, the gearbox will hang on to each gear for longer under steady acceleration than regular D mode. Perhaps this is acheived through the 50 "bonus points" that coding the tens digit to "1" acheives?
The article also states that linear acceleration sensors are used to prevent the gear from being changed part way through a corner, but alludes that this is only while in S mode. I have yet to see this behaviour in testing.

Tuners, take note. People would pay real money for reliable software tweaks like this!!!
In some cases, I assume Audi might even bless these modifications even if they cannot offer them at an Audi dealer.
I suspect that Audi cannot offer software modifications that might affect fuel efficiency or emissions for fear of ticking off the feds.
