Unlocking Bentley CD on Windows 7?
#11
Bentley aggravates customers...for what?
they are rationalizing a pricing scheme under the guise of "piracy protection." I wonder how much they will charge for the Windows 7 software. I've already payed twice for upgrades for both my A6 and Touareg manuals. If they didn't have dominant market share, they couldn't get away with this petty nonsense.
Their marketing department has the mentality of an insurance company's claim fraud unit. Classic case of "marketing myopia."

Does any know how to get an old windows 98 bentley disc to work in either windows XP or Window 7?? I got one a long time ago for my A4 and had it on a laptop with windows 98 but that laptop died and I'm now stuck. I'm not sure how good the older manuals are but would be nice to get the information off of it. I don't really want to go to EBAY way..

You broke the code. Even if you install it you won't be able to register it or get a code...ask me how I know this!!!
I have an old eBahn 2.0 r01 version CD and when I 'upgraded' to 3.1.0 online it effectively wrote over my old CD which doesn't work/content key won't unlock it anymore.
And worse, when I went to Bentley for a new content key for my new laptop Bentley says they no longer support the old software.
Loss all around.
BTW, Bentley is just a middleman, anyway. On my newer version (On a laptop that I intend to segregate for Audi stuff, vag-com, etc.) I upgraded to latest version online and actually LOST content, i.e, some pictures and instructions for removing the engine oil cooler on 4.2V8s. Bentley's comment was/is that Bentley is not responsible for content..it is what it is from Audi!!! So rather than having an expanding data base the manufacturer continually updates/degrades the content.
Still, I like the cars but my next convertible is likely to be a Mustang or Saleen (SMS). Unless silly money breaks and I just get an R8 V10 and let the stealer maintain it.

No time to deal with the Bentley CD on the eve of the timing belt job, so I ordered the service manual today from Bimmerzone.
I will continue to try to access the disc information, if not simply to print out the repair manual to have supplemental information. I doubt I will get anywhere with Bentley directly, but I would think a very computer savvy person will come along eventually and know a trick or two that can help me.
Vag-Com is also on my list. Will this work on Windows 7? Do I just need the $5 Ebay cable and the software (that's all)?

I'm getting ready to do the timing belt on the silver car, and just realized that since the demise of my XP desktop, there's no way this silly software will run on my Vista machine in a timely manner. Earlier someone mentioned that Bentley will offer a discount on the printed version for owners of the software; any hint as to how much I'll have to fork over if I opt to pay them...again?
Thanks,
Casey

Will be interesting to see what is in the Service manual on timing belt.
You might be better off using the write-ups in the Tech Section.
Don't forget:
1. Use the tools
2. Replace all related seals (cam, cam adjuster, etc)
3. Use "service position" rather than tearing the whole nose apart.

Bentley told me the discount is 50% for registered owners of the software. A manual for the same vehicle only (not a newer or older vehicle) can be acquired under the discount.
Since Bentley's price on the service manual is $109, the price would be about $55 plus shipping. I bought mine for $59 at Bimmerzone plus shipping, so really not a big difference, and for me the extra few bucks more than makes up for the hassle of dealing with Bentley Publishing.
4driver4, I bought the Blau kits for timing belt and valve cover/ cam seals plus tool rental this morning. I plan on printing out the DIY from this site, using the Bentley service manual and Blau also includes a print-out of the complete job - how turnkey it ends up being will be determined. Between all of these sources, hopefully I will be covered.
One thing to note is that many of the DIYs show the entire front end being pivoted off to the side rather than just being put into service position. How much extra work is involved in swinging the whole front out of the way, and is it worth it (does it make the job less back-breaking?)
Thanks

Unfortunately I will be doing this job using all available resources less the Bentley Manual. I placed the order for it on Saturday and it shipped out this morning. You would think UPS ground would have it to me on the West coast by Friday, but it isn't scheduled for delivery until Monday.
Wish me luck!
