What could this steering problem be?
I've got new tie rods, new steering rack, tires, etc. on my 2000 A6 Avant. The last 2 weeks, I've had a bizarre and dangerous problem.
It appears as if power steering boost is completely lost when I make a left turn, particularly at slow speeds. In fact, at parking lot speeds, it's almost impossible to make a right angle turn to the left.
The other weird thing is that, even when standing still, when I turn the wheel to the left, I hear a WHOOOSHHH sound as if air is being released from a container. With the hood open, it appears to come from the area to the right of the battery i.e. behind the wheel.
What could it be and how bad would the damage be? Just spend $4K on the above mentioned stuff and

It could be the filter in the fluid reserviour is blocked. This would restrict the supply of.....
fluid to the pump and cause pretty much what you have.
