WTF??? camshaft lobe practically worn off

I'm just guessing a bad cam lobe that was exacerbated by the lack of EP/ZDDP. Good point though that if ZDDP were the prime cause it would have had the effect on all the cams. Unless this one was just the first to fail.

unfortunately audi hasnt hear dof the phrase : if it aint brok dont fix it" otherwise they would have stuck with the2.8 L engine and just increased displacement... why in gods name they did a complete redesign is beyond me!

Most likley the bad lobe/lifter also has a bent valve giving aero compression on that cylinder. Mine has good compression on 5 of the 6 cylinders. Check that lifter try pressing on it with a screwdriver, it wont move. The part that fell down into the lifter probably jammed the valve open. Take a look at these pics look into the lifter. You can see the top of it sitting in there at a angle.

That one malfunctioning valve wouldn't explain multiple cylinder misfires, correct? My thought was that the timing belt slipped -- current belt has 60k mi. on it and has a fair amount of cracking on the outside
I already moved coil packs around and replaced plugs to rule those out.

So what parts you need to fix the problem?

I fix it
Hey guys quick update about my camshaft problem i fix it. It is hard it took me 2 weeks of work but i only work on the car after coming home from work i also did the timing belt and water pump job since i needed to take all those components anyway. This audi independent shop on the north side of chicago quote me at $4200 dls. to do the job. They are very professional and they know what they're doing but it was too much for me. I spend $1100 on parts and my labor was free. But i couldn't done it with out the people that take the time to do the how to guides on this forum. I now have to fix a small coolant leak from the thermostat i think is the O ring.
Don't give up on fixing yours this was the first time that i ever work on a car and i did it. So if i can do it you can too its all about reading and ill be happy to help if i can.

I think you are having the same problem as me when I replaced my t-stat. What happened to me was when I was bolting it down, due how close it was to the intake actuators, the two plastic bubble looking pieces, the firewall side o-ring pinched and didn't seal properly. So I bought a new t-stat just in case, second time around I had a friend push the t-stat back and down toward firewall while I bolted it down. Been 3,xxx miles since and no leaks.
