2006, 2007 or 2008 4.2 - which is best
I hit a deer with my 2005 A6 last week and it is totaled (as expected). I am now on the hunt for another A6 but want the 4.2. I have had 3 other A6's (05,07,05), all with the 3.2 (and all taken out by deer). I found two really nice 2008's, but they sold before I could even go to look at them. There definitely seem to be some differences in those model years. the 2006 seems to not have the FSI. Which would eliminate the carbon problem. One nice feature on the 2008's is they all had the S-line interior and bumpers, and there was an additional S-line that gave you the embossed seats, stainless door sills etc.
Other than the engine and S-line changes for 2008, what are the major differences in those years? Is there a huge difference with anything in the non-FSI vs. FSI engines? thanks for any feedback on this to help narrow my search and back in an A6.
In my searching, I came a across a really cool site that has the brochures
2008- http://www.auto-brochures.com/makes/...%20A6_2008.pdf
2007 - http://www.auto-brochures.com/makes/...%20A6_2007.pdf
No 2006 brochure that I could find.

That is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. I have been on Audiworld for awhile and never saw that page.
I know the 4.2 is thirsty. But it is so much fun to drive. I ride a motorcycle in the spring, summer and fall and drive my old Jeep on weekends so the Audi's I have had don't get driven a whole lot.

I found two really nice 08 A6 with the 4.2. Both sold very quickly. Hard to believe that a 10 year old car with 75k+ miles would be in such high demand. One was black on black, other one was charcoal on black (looked really nice). One other 4.2 in the area but it's blue with the beige interior. Looks like an old lady's car (no offense to anyone with that color combo). My 05 was the beige interior and I hated it. Kids always tracking dirt and other things that looked terrible on the light colored carpets. I'll keep looking.

The 4.2 is a great car, but as they get older they can get pricey to repair and keep in A1 shape. I'm somewhat OCD with my vehicles, so the fact that I just spent a lot of $$ on a full engine refresh so that I can keep it on the road for awhile longer, should be a testament to how much I also enjoy driving it and the growl and power of the 4.2.
BTW, the 06 model was non-FSI, so will never have the carbon build-up issues that you see on the later models. Take a look at the recent pics of the engine and you'll see how clean the valves were and there's definitely no loss in power due to excessive carbon.

Love my 06 4.2. One thing to look at is if it is a FSI motor. Mine is not, so on carbon build up, and the engine in and of it's self is much simpler than the FSI version
For example, there is not HPFP, and the fuel pressure regulator is actually in the fuel filter. I had been doing a ton of research to figure out why it was taking so long to start. Cranking times were as high a 10 second. Turns out, the fuel filter was bad. Still filtering just fine, but not holding the pressure in the line.
Just my quick thoughts

I endedup getting a 2008 4.2 with 115k miles. Had a great maintenance history and all my scans came out with no issues. Owner had recently done a carbon clean too. Has a couple of body dings, but nothing out of the ordinary for a 10 year old car. Had all the options I was looking for too. Backup camera, heated steering wheel, AMI w Bluetooth adapter. Has the powered rear sunshade too which is a really nice feature. Love the V8, very smooth and sounds great. Here are a couple of pics.
