Every morning for the last week I've walked out to my garage and found the brake lights of my 2006 A6 on. They definitely weren't on when I parked the car the previous evening. Depressing and releasing the brake pedal turns the lights off. Ran VAG-COM to look for error codes and found none. Only thing I can think of is the brake light switch being affected by the cold weather we have been experiencing.

Anyone ever had this problem?

Never had the issue on this car, but on another it was less brake fluid not forcing the brake pedal up all the way, also it definately kills the battery, it sounds like your battery does not die if you are able to see the lights in the morning.

Brake light problems are relatively common, switches can short intermittently, stick, all shorts of things. There is no link between the brake fluid and the brake lights (on the rear of the car, not the brake warning light on the dash). The switch is cheap between $10-$30 from the dealer, audi made the price reasonable because it is a safety issue. I've had serveral a6s where the brake light stays on and 99% of the time it's that

In my case it was the fluid and air in the system, if the pedal does not depress all the way the light would stay on, I could manually lift the pedal with my foot and light would go out. Once fluid was replaced and brakes bled everything worked fine did not change a switch as it was functioning normal.

My ? is if the brakes lights stay on when OP sees it in the morning does that not drain the battery ? Mine would drain the battery for sure.

My brake light switch cost $11.99 at the dealer. My car did not want to upshift out of first gear because of the fried brake light switch. The replacement switch looked much stronger.

I'm having this issue right now and it killed my battery. Do you happen to have the part # for this brake light switch and how easy/difficult is it to change it out? Thanks much!

I have the exact same problem done just about everything... I I’m not sure what Audi Dealer has the brake light switch for a reasonable price.. but I can say spending money on just to fix this problem becomes a tremendously annoying when it doesn’t correct the problem..

The brake light switch did the trick for me. Issue never came back after I replaced it.
