A6 3.2 Correct Engine Sound vs. Timing Chain Tensioner Rattle
Hi Everyone,
I just purchased an A6 3.2 Quattro with 80K miles and am happy to join the forum. I was curious what the correct engine sound sounded like. I have been reading a lot about the timing chain tensioners and I believe most videos on Youtube are ones with the failed tensioners.
However, with the loud FSI ticking on these cars, I am having problems distinguishing the difference, especially given the varying audio quality on the Youtube videos.
If anyone had a video of a normal A6 3.2 engine sound, that would be greatly appreciated. Or if theres a good way to describe the sound of the broken tensioners compared with the normal ticking?
Thanks!

Hello, I have since sold my A6 but I had the timing job done twice (the first time was done poorly). I believe I have video of the varying sound as well as the completely gone tensioner sound. I will have to locate it and I was get back to you. I'll get back to you with some links.

Ok so unfortunately the videos are gone, but I found something very similar. the important thing to take note of is.. the ticking in the front of the engine is totally differently from the rattle that comes from the rear. The ticking sound is normal, but the rattling is totally not. The user demonstrates the difference when he goes from the side rear to the front of the engine. Listen closely... the rattle also gets louder and scarier sound as you accelerate.
