Brake pads/rotors replacement cost ?
Hello,
The light regarding my brake pads (2006 A6 4.2 s-line) came on so I went to get an estimate (at a local gas garage - I will go to NTB next) to replace them. I was told that now, you need to replace the rotors along with the pads (they told me that they do not resurface rotors anymore and that rotors are just too soft for the brake pads these days). Here is the estimate I got
Front: labor $ 167, parts $571
Rear: labor $279, parts $812
Four wheel brake system flush: $119
Total $1775 What ????
This seems crazy high. What are people paying these days for such a job?
Thx

When I did my brake job I got upgraded performance rotors for $350. Pads were for $118 for the front, $66 for the rears. And I paid $160 for labor. So total was just shy of $700.

I got Akebono ceramic pads from placeforbrakes.com (you might have to call them for the rears). IIRC, total for pads was about $150. They are amazing - no more brake dust. I got Brembo rotors on Ebay for a total of $200. Had a local shop install the fronts for a couple hundred bucks, so only $550 spent so far. They said I can get some more miles out of the rears, so I'll put those parts in later (most likely at the dealer due to the tool needed to release the e-brake). It pays to buy the parts yourself and use an indy shop for the install, provided they have the expertise.

Solid rotors can be planed, but this really only needs to be done if there is a vibration. Little grooves in rotors usually don't hurt performance. Rotors only need to be replaced if they are too thin. When you do get new rotors and pads, be sure to bed them in properly right away. There is a lot of information on the internet on how to do this.

I got front and rear Akebono's from placeforbrakes.com, and concentric rotors for front and rear from them as well. About $425 or so. $240 installation by my local indy shop, so $665 for rotors and pads replaced on front and rear.. great stuff!
