We've updated the results for the A6 to include owner experiences through March 31, 2010. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2006: 83, about average

2005: 137, worse than average, small sample size

Consumer Reports recently rated the C6 A6 as one of the two most unreliable cars in its survey (the other being the Jaguar XF). But their results are sometimes off by a surprisingly large margin.

I'd like to have some results for recent model years of the C6 A6--a matter of getting more owners involved.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2007: 189, worse than average but very small sample size; the result for the 2006 is likely much more accurate

2006: 69, about average

2005: 112, about average

Decent sample size for the 2006, small and even very small sample sizes for the others.

Mike, I think CR's unreliable rating was based on the new 3.0T cars. They used to like the 3.2. CR is annoying that way variant to variant, they will recommend the GS for example and not really point out less than stellar record of the AWD model.

I recall the same, but not necessarily because of the engine. CR will often single out an engine, but then you'll look at the detailed ratings and the problem is something unrelated like the audio system.

We have quite a few 2010 S4 owners participating in the survey, and they haven't been reporting problems with the supercharged 3.0.

2008: 127, worse than average

2007: 163, worse than average

2006: 38, better than average

2005: 127, worse than average

The 2006 is the only year with a decent sample size, though the 2005 is close. The sample sizes for the 2007 and 2008 are very small, so these results are mosts likely to be inaccurate.

I am not sure how to reconcile the difference between the 2006 and the others, other than to suggest that this difference would go away with larger sample sizes, especially for the 2007 and up.
