Default changing differential oils on 4.2 6HP19A

Hi guys,

I was looking for confirmation regarding the oil types which are required when changing out the differential oil.

Front and rear use G 052 145 S2
Middle one (as transfer case) uses G 055 145 A2

Can someone confirm and also how much of each I need to purchase?

thanks,

Raj

The middle takes about 1/2 liter, sold by the liter at Audi $100 per. When changing it you have to go slow, there are two chambers, and you need to allow the fluid to equalize from one chamber to the other, takes about five minutes to drain and five minutes to fill. Changing the middle solved the "quattro steer" for about six months, but now it is back. An Audi tech says there is no real fix.

For the front and rear I just used high quality SAE 75W-90 API GL-5 fluid. I think it was like 3 quarts total.

Also, only the rear diff has a drain plug, the front and center have to be "sucked" out through the fill hole.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to use one of the following to change the diff oil: Motul 300, Redline, or Titan Fuchs...all have been rated very highly and should work well. I'm going to do this next week and will provide feedback

I am having this done at the dealer today and will let you know what fluids and levels are identified on the invoice.

To answer the question, you need to know what transmission you have in your car. Based upon that, you will know the tranny fluid required and can ball park costs. For a tranny fluid drop (change filter, gasket and replace ~ 5 liters) it will cost anywhere from $600+, the differential oil change will be $150+. My costs are most likely on the low end, so you may not find these. Furthermore, the cost of the transmission fluid (ZF 6, 6+, 8, etc...) is quite expensive, however ranges for each one.

If you want a quote, pick up the phone a call around to your local dealer or trusted Audi/VW shop.

Default 05 4.2

So I called my local dealership and they claim my year/model never needs a tranny drain/flush as it is a sealed casing....can anyone verify?.....I have an 05 a6 4.2l

It does tend to shift hard from 1-2 and from 2-1

They are full of $hit. The manufacturer of the tranny suggests every 60k miles. In addition, there is a TSB for you year calling for a fluid change and a software update to the tranny. I have an 05 4.2 and it is at the dealer having the fluids changed for the third time.

HAHA.....well alrighty then. Time to find a new Audi mechanic in the Denver area. Whats the bill look like after your visit to the dealer ship? I will have to look up the TSB's and see what the cost is on it as well.
