Default Code reader/diagnostics

Looking for the "best bang for the buck" code reader for my A6/C6 3.2L. I am a shade tree wrencher at best. I suspect a hand held style would be best but looking for the expert options from this forum. Thanks.

The xtool vag401 appears to be gaining a following. Cheap and powerful.

Agree!!! Plus it's super handy, small and light. You can keep it in your car on the go. I have it since 4 years. It still looks new and works great!

I have a Carista and Fixd OBD2 dongle. Carista is a better code reader (shows pending and stored codes) but doesn't show live data. Fixd only displays active codes but does support live data. Both are cheap.
