Default EPC, ESP, CEL & OMGWTF?

I hate digging up old threads, but I'm having similar symptoms to what is posted in the thread linked below. I'm also having a hard time of finding what the resolution was, if any.

https://www.audiworld.com/forums/sho....php?t=2796173

Anyone else having these issues?

Car will occasionally have a hard time starting (turns over and over before finally starting). Once it's running, the EPC and ESP lights come on, engine idle is very rough (sometime will die), car bucks and surges when you try to drive it. Check engine light comes on. After a while, the car will settle out. After that, the EPC and ESP lights will go away when the car is restarted, but it takes a while for the CEL to go away. When I pull the codes with my vagcom, I get a whole host of codes. Each of them say "Short to Ground - Intermittent" or "Open Circuit - Intermittent".

The problem seems to be happening more frequently and I concerned that it's going to get worse. It's so random and I'm sure I won't be able to get it to do it for the dealer.

Any ideas?

Once the CEL light is triggered it will only go off by itself after certain number of starts and shutdowns. It persists for some time even though the engine is running clean. Codes are retained in the ECU until cleared by VAG-COM.

Post the codes so we can see what's going on.

Looks like your battery does not have enough charge or the contacts are oxidated. If it's good then try to clean the posts. I would also check the grounding strip.

Check all your fuses also. I found a post on another forum where one of the O2 sensors had internal short and it was throwing similar codes. The posts are related to A4/S4 but that is fine as they are standard VAG codes applying across Audi/VW/Skoda/SEAT cars.

Multiple Short to Ground Codes

Another one:

CEL On - Short to Ground

Did you clear the codes to see if the codes come back?

jbrentd - as i had posted in the thread you linked...have you ruled out the electrical relay switches in the top of the engine bay? Sounds like an electrical current issue and a faulty relay will trigger a whole slew of errors at startup.

So, since I bought an extended warranty when I got the car, I figured I might as well use it. Took it to the dealer and they diagnosed three things:

* Engine Relay (probably the same one you are referring to)
* O2 sensor
* bad coil pack

They are covering the O2 sensor and the coil pack under my warranty, but not the relay for some reason. So I am buying the $30 relay to install. Hopefully, I'll be good to go.

mine did the same thing. i think its the ground wire. for me, i had the same codes. i cut off the end of the ground at the battery +, and -, area the brown wires..... under the hood. and i pulled on the other ground wires jsut to move them around, but i think its the ground that is in back of the left headlight area on the inner frame, i cleaned this one, and i havent' had the problem since. i did this at the same time, so, i dont know which one it really was.

After being out of town for a couple of days, I went to pick up the car last night. It started right up, but the idle felt rough. So, I drove around the lot once and it was getting worse. Glad it was happening while I was still there because these "come and go" type of issues can be hard to show to the service guy.

Their initial diagnosis was the fuel pump, but we'll see. Glad I bought the extended warranty. I did mention the ground issue noted by gn240z.
