ESP Failure, idles rough, feels like it will stall when hitting the accelerator
Hello all,
Leaving work today going up a hill my 2006 A6 just randomly got this issue where I get a message saying ESP Failure. The car started idling very rough, and if I press the accelerator the car feels like it's going to stall out. I pulled over to stop the engine and restarted a bunch of times. The issue is consistent now. I saw this post (link) saying it was the Crank Position Sensor but for an A4.
A couple of questions, Is this problem indeed the Crank Position Sensor? If so, which sensor do I need? I can't seem to narrow down the exact part number. If not the Crank sensor, what should I look at? What can be the problem?
Also, my car is parked at work, and it does drive slow. Would it be ok to drive 10 miles to my house in this condition?
My A6 was running perfectly before without any issues.
Thanks,
Nick

To find the problem and fix correctly, you need to scan the engine, which DTCs should show up. If you have access to VCDS (VAG-COM) or other OEM-equivalent scan tool, then that will tell you the source of your problem.

Few vcds are sold on eBay. Also you can check on the vcds forum if anyone has one near you and can help you out for a six pack of of beer

Sorry, I was unclear, I'm not sure which one I should buy or how cheap I can go that will work. I have seen cables for as low $5 and as much as >$300. Does the include the software as well? or Do I have to purchase that as well?
