you have a 2G system, most likely High, but could be Basic

MMI 2G High
- No SD card slot
- In dash 6 disc CD changer with separate DVD drive in the trunk for navigation
- contains a color center screen
- No "joystick" on MMI control ****

That's a NAV DVD, not an MMI update disc.

It says "mp3 from CD".

Also I have a Dension 500 setup so can do mp3 directly from a variety of sources

There was update to the 6 Disc CD changer I believe first showing up on MY2008 that introduced mp3 play ability. On older cars the changer will not play mp3's. Only CD's.

Here's a walk-through on upgrading the MMI, that came from another site, that seemed to work. Be aware than upgrading your MMI CAN cause it to 'brick' so let's be careful and it's a good idea to have a trickle-charger on your battery.

1 - If your phone is connected, disconnect it.

2 - Insert the 4F0906961AB.iso update CD into slot 1 in the CD changer

3 - Hold 'setup' and 'return' buttons - this brings you to a 'Current config' menu showing your current versions

4 - Press the lower right button around the MMI control **** to select 'SWUpdate'

5 - Select 'CDROM' as the 'Download server' - When i selected the the current disk i was in i received an error no metadata folder.

6 - after this error it will prompt you to try again before you select it eject the current disk and put in disk 1 wait a moment for it to load then select the try again option.

7 - Select standard or XXXX-HI (don't remember the full name)

8 - look through the list if you see a Y or S scroll all the way to the bottom and run the update.
- After it runs through and updates repeat the process and verify that all the items in the list on disk 1 say a N after them
- If all items say no or NA then go on to disk 2.

9 - Repeat the process with disk 2.

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/BnOoXZL5sTA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

addition 'clarification' of steps, IF you don't get an error:

If your phone is connected, disconnect it.
Insert one of the 2 4610 update CDs into slot 1 in the CD changer
Hold 'setup' and 'return' buttons - this brings you to a 'Current config' menu showing your current versions
Press the lower right button around the MMI control **** to select 'SWUpdate'
Select 'CDROM' as the 'Download server'
You are now presented with a menu showing you a listing of each control module and whether or not an update is available for it with either a 'Y' (Yes), 'N' (No), or 'S' (Some?), I saw the 'S' next to a module that had several subcomponents that needed updating.
In any case, you simple scroll to the bottom and select 'Run Update'
I noticed that when an updated completed, 1 or more other updates became available to run.
You repeat this process, occasionally swapping between CDs, until it tells you 'No modules selected for update' for both CDs.
That's it.

Quick Reply: Finally got the MMI updated in the 2005.
