Software version is USA 0030 or 30. I have mixed messages on what is updated or old. The dealer who put in the transmission says 20 was the divide. On these forums i have seen 40 and 50.

I repeat what is the software part number? Mine is 4F2910156Q. Yours? I understand the version is 0030. Did you check the list of the software versions from the german site?
Example 4F2910156R has 3 different versions, 0030 being the oldest.
4F1910156P has 0030 and 0050
Also check TSB 2028608 or TSB 2028279/3

Pitzury, sorry there is a pile of this stuff that I do not understand. Part of it is I have this notation in my records from the transmission change:Transmission Code: HNL HYR --- JMK after replacement

I can find the original HYR on your list, not the replacement "JMK"

The software part number you refer to is: 4F2 910 156D per vcds:
Address 02: Auto Trans Labels: 09L-927-760.lbl
Part No SW: 4F2 910 156 D HW: 09L 927 156 A
Component: AG6 09L 3.2 FSI USA 0030
Revision: --H01--- Serial number: 4105892
Coding: 0000002

I seems like you have the latest version according to both the German forum (4F2910156D 0030 JER, HYR A6) and the TSB#2028279/3 July 14, 2015 I attached. So you should replace the fluid with LG8 . I would remove and replace the mechatronic square seal and harness o-rings and then reset the adaptations after the fluid exchange and do an adaptations re-learn run.

Thanks for your patience. How much additional LG8 do I need to have on hand if I remove and replace the seals in addition to just the fluid exchange?

I believe 8 L of fluid is barely enough if the valve body is removed. I wrote about that here ZF 6HP19A tiptronic gearbox (A6 3.0 TDI Quattro) - Page 34
I would buy the ZF kit that contains 7 L and the harness o-rings and pan gasket. Then I would get 2 more bottles of LG8 and go to work. If you want to go crazy you flush the converter too but you may not have to if the old fluid does not look too bad.

That makes sense to me. I am taking my time developing the courage for this job. I have struggled with the noting of just a drain and fill. If i got 8+L out of the system in the change I would feel much better.

Thanks for adding your up to date adaptation values pitzury!

Whats the procedure for updating the transmission software and how did you obtain the software? How much improvement in the shifting performance of your transmission do you attribute to the software upgrade compared to the fluid change and adaptations reset?

i guess you’ve done three things which can all affect transmission performance and I’m wondering if you now have a view on which is worthwhile, or are all essential in your view?

Update done at the dealership. Used to be the local Audi Service Mgr. I did not notice any difference between the two versions of the software. The reason I did it was because the latest version came out a few months after my car was delivered( 09.16.2011) and there were no other changes since. They both work fine but there may be some minor changes that the factory did to the cars in last 3-4 months of the production run.
The trans was operating OK with the original fluid which had 162 K miles. Remember I said that the fluid was not too dark and I believe one of the reason is that these transmissions run at about no more than 60*C most of the times. Yet after replacing the fluid things got better and better. Than, once I reset the adaptations, I believe things got the way it was intended from the factory.

My opinion is that changing the fluid and the square seal by removing the Valve Body will require at least 8 bottles and it is not a hard job. And if you want to drain/bleed the cooler too you will need at least 8.5 bottles. Obviously you do that after you did everything you can to diagnose any issue you might have and also study the behavior and adaptations before replacing the fluid.
Then reset and relearn the adaptations. Last thing I would do is update the software if the car qualifies for a TSB and if there is one available.
