PSA: Anti-rattle spring clips for A6/ATE caliper
#11
A big bump to this-old-thread.
I had my front brake pads replaced recently and had the anti rattle springs come off about a month later. Turns out that the brake pads had the wrong spring retainer and did not clip to the anti rattle spring correctly. This allowed the anti rattle springs to come off at some point. I am now told that my pads were probably for the C5 (older style caliper) and not the C6.
Like uberwgn I was shocked at the cost from the dealership. Two springs were close to $90.00! A quick search found this post and I ordered them from RockAuto for $10.00.
Thank you uberwgn for the info!
And to add to the PSA: Make sure you (or your mechanic) get the right brake pads!

Ok, your comment got me thinking I needed to make sure I had the right part number. So here are the Audi part numbers for the anti-rattle clips:
1k0-615-269A superseded by:
4f0-615-269 current number for all 320mm, 321mm, 345mm, 347mm Teves Brakes on C6 and B7 models.
8e0-615-269 (B6/7 S4 part number) These are the anti rattle springs with the $4 logo plate. Good for 5HP .
Crossing the 4f0-615-269 number gives me the following:
13499 Dorman Mnaufacturing/ Duralast
I ordered the 13499 clips for $12 shipped. Should arrive by friday. Will confirm fit when they get here.

I installed the anti-rattle clips today. The Dorman Manufacturing 13499 were in fact a correct fit. Replaced the pads as well.
FWIW, here is some information from the box -
Dorman Manufacturing part number HW13499. " Replaces Coniseal, Raybestos, Wagner, Bendix part number H15981A."
$12 for the clips and $50 for pads. All is now quiet for less than the cost of anti-rattle clips from the dealer.

I'm going to rebump this thread--please take note if you are ordering front brake pads for your A6.
I ordered various parts from Autohausaz.com back in November. I didn't actually replace the front pads and rotors on my 2005 3.2 A6 until a couple of weeks ago. When I installed the Mintex pads spec'ed on their website, I noticed that while the inboard pads had the correct three tab clip opposite the braking surface, the outboard pads had a different clip than the original. The original had a three tab clip on the outboard pad, with a notch in the central tab that engages the anti rattle clip.
On other cars I've done, I've seen times where the tab configuration on replacement pads didn't exactly match the OEM, and they've always worked OK. Not this time. Although the anti rattle clips went into place OK, a few days later I began to notice a rattle from the front end going over bumps. Eventually I checked and found that both anti rattle clips were gone, as previously described above.
I just post this information to save anyone else the grief of having to hunt down new anti rattle clips and pads to replace the Mintex ones.
Here's a good picture of what the clip on the pads should look like. The outboard pad is the one without the wire for the brake sensor. Check out the 2nd picture for a good close up:

I replaced my pads with Hawk HPS pads and now my calipers are rattling over bumps. They have the correct notch for the anti-rattle spring to hook into. I also put in new Dorman anti-rattle springs, same part number as listed in an above post. I even replaced the caliper slides/boots. I have taken the brakes apart 487432497 times and cannot for the life of me get them to stop rattling. Any solutions?

Reading these types of threads just makes me glad I recently did my brakes and installed OEM pads and rotors.
Prior to owning my A6 Avant I had a Mazda 3 in which I installed aftermarket pads on several occasions and there was always some issues. They either squealed like a pig or rattled, and finally I went back to OEM pads and all was right again
If wheel dust bothers you get a 5L jug of Sonax wheel cleaner
