Default New Tires and XL rating

Need new tires. Did my research and have been trying to decide between the new Conti Extreme Contact DSW and the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus tires. Went to the local Discount Tire and was told that I cannot install the Conti's because that tire spec (245/40 18) was rated an SL not an XL. They stated the Michelin's could be installed as they were XL rated. I don't get it. Ironically, I stopped by the dealership and they will install the Conti's no problem.

My question, is the XL rating really an absolute line and you shouldn't install non XT's on the car?

I've been driving Conti Pro Contacts for the past three years and I don't think they're XL rated.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Not sure if my sig line is still there, but I have the 4.2 engine (which I know is heavier).

Well, if you typically drive alone or with one passenger, then it shouldn't be an issue. But if you pile 5 guys in along with their golf clubs in the trunk, and drive over the speed limit, then it can be an issue. If there is an accident due to tire failure, then Discount Tire can be found liable for installation of the non-Audi approved (non-XL) tires - that's why they won't do it. The dealership is wrong for allowing the installation of non-XL tires, because it makes them liable for any future issues. Choice is yours, however, based on your driving habits.
