Default Rough Idle when engine is cold

I have a 2008 A6 3.2. When I start it up in the morning when engine is cold, it would vibrate around 1200 rpm for about 30 sec to 60 sec., once rpm go down to 600, it would smooth out. Sometimes the check engine light comes on and it would go away 2 or 3 days later and eventually come back on. The dealer said it was misfiring on cylinder 3 and 4 due to lean fuel and told me to use Shell 93 octane, which I have been using anyways. Does anybody out there have a similar issue? What was the solution?

Thank You

Telling you to try different fuel is BS. I'd take it to another dealer for a second opinion.

Another consideration, in 1998 I had a 98 Passat V6 and I felt some rough starts and at hard acceleration there were times when I could feel hesitation for a few seconds. I took it to the dealer and they told me there were certain cylinders misfiring. After further examination it turned out a gas station I'd been filling up at sometimes had water in their gas and this was causing the misfiring. The dealer drained my tank and I never filled up there again. I also never had the problem again.

That was my original thought, bad gas. I tried 2 other gas stations and maybe 4 tank full also tried some dry gas to get rid of the water. I also tried octane booster, nothing seems to help so far.

ask them to move the coilpacks to other cylinders and see if the problem travels with them.

coilpacks are notorious on audis.

It could be the coilpacks. In addition there is a TSB for a stumbling cold engine. Drop me a PM with your e-mail address and I will send you the TSB.

for an 08? I didn't think it would apply. You'd think it be fixed by now

Tell the dealer to look at TSB 2014923/2 from Nov 19, 2008 (also known as 01-08-09), and possibly 2010890/8 although that one's a long shot since it only applies to 05-06MY.

With an 08 I was thinking that TSB 24 08 34 2018107/1 dated July 18, 2008 was also a possibility.

yeah possibly. definitely worth doing. a vag-com scan would give up some codes to narrow this down furhter.

here is a good one, when I 1st start the car in the morning, if I pump the gas once after the car is started, the engine does not vibrate. Is there some kind of check valve in the gas line somewhere that keeps the gas line prime overnight?
