Default takata airbag interim fix

I received a recall notice for my 2007 A6. They will replace the present airbag with a temporary until a permanent replacement is installed. Has anyone else received a notice like this.

Yes, received the letter today too. Dealer told me last week that they have seen some (apparently non-final) replacements trickle in and expected to have mine within a few weeks.

I also received the letter today for my 2006 A6 Avant.

Interesting.. I'll have to keep my eye out for this. I wonder what an "Interim fix" for an airbag could be? Deactivate/remove? If they are replacing it, why would it not be a permanent fix?

The interim fix is to replace the existing Takata airbag with a new Takata airbag of the original design until new designed airbags become available from another source (Takata declared bankruptcy). The logic is that since the airbag failure is due to time and exposure to certain ambient conditions, the new replacement Takata airbag will be safe until the new designed airbags become available for this massive recall (~11 million).

Sounds more like the interim fix is more like stalling the real fix and hoping most of the defective cars go out of service to cut down on the cost of retrofitting them all.

Given the number of recalled vehicles and models, the replacement inflaters will require some time to design, manufacture, and ship to the dealers for installation into the affected cars. So, the interim fix is to allow time to produce, distribute, and install the replacements. FYI, the passenger side inflater sells for over $1.0K, so you can imagine the total cost just for the affected A6s.
