Default Thinking about buying

Hey everyone, first timer here!

Local guy is selling his 2006 A6 3.2 quattro. It has higher miles with 250k on it. He is looking to get 1,000 USD for it.

Issue is he said it had a leaky valve cover and he let it sit for a few months, he went to start it to check the gaskets and he heard some clunking and shut it down. He then let it sit for a few months again and yesterday he said he took off the valve cover and found a broken rocker and a snapped cam bearing cap.

What are your opinions? Would you buy it if you could? Im on the fence about it. I really dont want to do a whole motor rebuild or buy a new motor but part of me thinks there is a good possibility that metal pieces found their way through the motor and it could be RIP or should I be more concerned what caused it?

He sent me pics but idk how to put them on here

Don't buy someone's headache...there is few things worse than a SUPER cheap German car. Since you invariably spend a LOT more $$ getting it into ok shape than you original thought you would. Yes $1K, is insanely cheap, but if you have to rebuild the engine and potentially other parts...you'll be well over $7K soon enough.

Why not just buy a car with a stellar maintenance history and something that's been pampered for more $$. Since you'll end up spending that money either upfront or on the back-end.

What KevinGary said.

I got very lucky, But I knew going in that the trans was going to be an issue. 06 A6 4.2 quattro $5500 the really lucky part was, I found a trans for $1300 +shipping that only had 95k on it and a warranty.

Broken parts in the motor, no way in hell.

I'm more interested in how/ what they did (specifically) to keep the car running to 250k miles.
Currently at 155k now and would love to hear ideas and what's imperative to keep this beast running strong.

Probably the most important thing is to pray that you don’t get the timing chain tensioner and guide issue. Some people have done the fix preemptively

At 186k, my 3.2 is just starting to have a slight tensioner issue on cold starts. VCDS block 93 readings are still holding steady though. When they start rising, I'll be changing upper tensioners.
I'm shooting for 250k. Engine & trans fluid maintenance seem to be the key.
