I've been working on Audi's for year's. Without a VAG-com you just can't do much. However, if you're not doing your own work, then it's value is limited. In which case I'd recommend borrowing one for that random check or adaptation that you might want to do. You can find one in most metro area's for the occasional use.

But here's one example on the C6. With the electronic parking brake, you need the scan tool to retract the brake so you can change out the pads. Without the scan tool, you'll ruin the electronic brake if you try to change the pads.
As for buying a PC, check around on eBay, Craigslist, etc. for a simple used laptop that you can load both the VAG–COM and the Bentley repair manual. You can also buy the Bentley manual from Ross Tech at discounted price when you purchase the VAG–COM adapter. That's what I did when I updated my adapter for the C6.

I finally convinced myself to stop being cheap. I bought the CD from ebay yesterday for 80.99 shipped. Nine bucks cheaper than ross-tech.
Me and buddy are going to split the cost of the vag-com. How many computers can the software be downloaded to once you pay for the license?
I do have a PC (but its not a laptop). I figured I'd just hook it up to the long 16' cable that ross tech sells instead of buying a PC. I also heard that u could use a Mac running pentium processors of you installed Microsoft XP using the boot-camp command. I'm computer illiterate and I don't know what this means...???
I'm gonna splurge on the warranty as well but may wait until something breaks first.

I bought my Bentley from EBay too. It was the cheapest I could find and was factory sealed and legit so all is good.
The license is in the cable so you can run the software on as many computers as you want. You obviously only can run one copy at a time though. Without the cable the software doesn't run. It's definitely a good investment since you can then also access support on here and ask questions about what is ailing your car.

EBay cables especially the $20 cables will only work with the demo version of VAG-com. The latest version of that I believe is 4.12. That version does not support many of the later functions that are now available on our cars. Many functions are also disabled and/or limited. There is also no support for the demo version.
As posted above also, the C6 requires the Hex+(USB/COM)+CAN cable. Since the license and validation is built into the cable, you need an official cable to run an official version of VAG-com(VCDS).
Those cables are also used for other programs than VAG-com. Another issue is the shape of the OBDII connector., On some of the off-brand cables, they are too big to fit some Audi's. This is primarliy older Audi's that have the connector is other than the kick panel location mostly.
