water spots is a bit easier to take care of.. the oxidation fogging issue is much more stubborn.

they say Menzerna Polish works, heard also Sonus Aluminum Restore works.... will try WD40 this week and Menzerna in the spring

Ah yes me ..........I have a Lexus is250 and always get booked so I painted all shiny parts with a stealth paint. The service guy said it looked like my car had been in a fire..hmm...he didn't notice the Radar detector behind the grill.
Regards the clear cote , you need a marine grade and you need to build the coats up to stop it cracking and going yellow, you wont see it , the chrome will just look extra shiny.

My car's trim is terrible in this regard.

You can't be serious that it's as simple as wiping it with WD-40. Really? I guess I'll give it a try.

I've also used Menzerna FMJ previously, but I'll have to look into their polish options for my trim issue if the WD-40 doesn't do the trick.

I have a same problem with my chrome trim. What would be the best way to convince the Audi dealer to replace it under warranty and also to replace it with black trim instead of chrome?

Absolutely serious, fogging water spots or what ever you want to call it is fixed just with a wipe .I followed up a day later with another wipe it was still in near perfect condition and his car has been sitting out in the sun baking for days and still the same.
I think it is oxidisation somehow, don't know why but once the air supply is removed by applying a coat of WD40 problem is gone.

Problem not gone. Problem covered up with highly reflective oily coating which levels the surface and hides water spots, all while doing a great job of attracting dirt. As long as I don't mind constantly cleaning the dirt it traps and maintaining a nice coat of WD-40 on my chrome trim, then no problem.

Wipe WD-40 off, problem still there. If I wiped my whole car down in WD-40 it would look great, for about 30 seconds until dirt and grit blowing around in the wind started sticking to it.

I had a particularly bad case of shiny silver plastic trim with years of water spots. In my case, and I do not recommend anyone else try this, after trying the WD-40 BS, I found this worked: 1200 wet/dry, 2000, white polishing compound, wax. Shiny like new, and problem gone.
