what is this part of of the motor?

That part isn't on my '06 A6, and doesn't show up in ETKA 7. So I'm guessing that someone added that part as an after–market item. It might be an oil catch can. What does it connect to on your engine?

I have the same part on mY 05 4.2 so it may be only a 4.2 part. I am the original owner and the car has been dealer maintained so i can say that it is not a mod. I still don't know what it is, but it is OEM.

It's not for looks, because it's ugly.
It IS a resonance chamber and it's purpose is to quiet the intake noise. They tend to smooth out the sounds from the intake pulses that we all love to hear. You know, the growl sound cars make when you install a cold-air intake.....that sound.
They do this so Grandmas, soccer moms, and generally boring fellas who buy them.......won't complain that it makes "sounds or noises" when they push on the gas. They want it silent or sounding like a vaccuum cleaner.
If you were to remove that wart and put a plug in the hole, it may even make new sounds and noises that you like.
As for the threads, they're no worry at all unless you don't like looking at them. In that case, you should be able to thread the little rubber keeper down a little further to cover them up.
